국정원 "北, ICBM 대기권 재진입 기술 개발 한계에 봉착" South Korea's top intel agency says Pyongyang has hit a snag in developing its intercontinental ballistic missiles... due to its limitations in acquiring a core element: the needed technology to enable atmospheric re-entry. Kim Mok-yeon shares with us the NIS analysis. The National Intelligence Service announced on Thursday that North Korea has yet to develop the necessary re-entry technology... for its missiles to reach their target. During a meeting held at the National Assembly, the intelligence body said that Pyongyang hasn't secured the key technologies needed to build a ballistic missile that can protect warheads from the heat and stress of re-entering the Earth's atmosphere, a crucial skill needed in developing functional intermediate-range and intercontinental ballistic missiles. It added that the recent lull in provocations from the North... may be due to the effects of international sanctions... as well as financial issues caused by the Kim Jong-un regime's previous missile tests. The NIS warned however,... that the regime could resume its missile tests at any time,... and said it would continue monitoring the situation. Regarding the latest news, an expert on the industry says the announcement has a sense of credibility, adding that technological difficulties could be the main reason for North Korea's two-month hiatus in missile launches. (KOREAN) "I also think that the biggest difficulty North Korea faces in developing ICBMs is the re-entry capability. They might have enough materials to fire short range missiles, but I think it will take them more time to develop re-entry technology. It will take them more time, but I think it's still early to say that they are facing limitations." In July, Pyongyang conducted two tests of the Hwasong-14 ICBM, which they claimed is capable of striking the continental United States. The Kim Jong-un regime has claimed it has succeeded in developing re-entry technology, but Seoul and Washington still remain skeptical. Kim Mok-yeon, Arirang News.
